Moldavite

Born of impact.

Around 15 million years ago, a meteorite struck what is now southern Germany.

The force of the impact melted terrestrial rock and blasted it into the atmosphere, where molten material cooled into a translucent green natural glass before falling back to Earth across parts of Central Europe.

That glass is moldavite.

Rare, strange and unmistakable, it sits somewhere between Earth and space: a terrestrial material that owes its existence to an extraterrestrial collision.

That was enough to get our attention.

From chaos to precision

Moldavite isn’t a conventional gemstone. It is a type of natural glass known as a tektite, found principally in the Czech Republic. Its colour ranges from olive and forest green to darker bottle greens, with every piece carrying its own variations and character.

Much moldavite jewellery celebrates the material in its naturally sculpted form. At Certain Stars, we became fascinated by what happens when it is cut and faceted, taking something born in chaos and giving it precision, geometry and light.

Set against substantial sterling silver, the result is something distinctly different.

Where it started

Moldavite was the starting point for Certain Stars.

A material created when Earth met something from beyond it; formed through extraordinary heat and impact, carried through the atmosphere and eventually found millions of years later in the soils of Central Europe.

Cut and faceted, its natural variations take on a new character as they catch the light. We pair it with sterling silver to create pieces that bring together something ancient and elemental with clean, contemporary form.

No two stones are exactly alike.

Born from collision. Shaped by time. Made wearable in Britain.

And then there’s the myth

Moldavite also has a more mysterious reputation.

For centuries it has fascinated crystal collectors and those interested in the metaphysical. It has been described as a stone of transformation, a cosmic catalyst and, rather more dramatically, a bringer of sudden change.

Stories abound of people wearing moldavite and watching life take an unexpected turn.

Science has yet to confirm any of this.

We rather like the story anyway.
